Kerala, the southern state of peninsular India is characterized with the mixture of Aryan and Dravidian traditions in the field of medicine. It was known as Gurushishya parampara in which the master transferred the wisdom to an ardent disciple in a systematic manner. Kerala with exotic environment and rich culture is considered the cradle of Ayurveda where this system became a way of life to the people. Here traditions are the part of life with individuals, families, and society. Centuries of ancestral traditions in Ayurveda specialties are strongly linked to certain families which attracted people from various places to get remedy for different ailments. The vast experience gathered by the 'vaidya' (Senior physician) in such a family passed on their knowledge to their sons and thus kept the system in undiluted form for generations came forth.
For decades dating back even to the reign of Cochin dynasty in South India, the KALARICKAL family situated at Kanjoor near Kalady in Kerala has been justly reputed for kalaripayattu [martial arts] Marma chikitsa and Ayurvedic system of treatments. Here is a model of health and illness that stood the test of time blending tradition and science. Legends have it that when the Cochin empire had been under constant threats from outside, ancestors of present family who were masters of Kalarippayattu and Marma chikitsa were brought from Malabar area to impart expert training to the soldiers of the then dynasty by the orders from the Highness. Most of the descendents of these masters became experts in Sanskrit literature and in the systems of Ayurveda treatments. These scholars imparted this knowledge of age old traditions to generations which followed in the typical gurukula system. The Kalari tradition of this family dates back to many centuries and the goddess deity (Bhagavati) is worshiped since many years by the masters here for protection and healing. Pooja takes place periodically (worshiping) with an annual festivity.

K K Krishnankuttykurup an expert in traditional Ayurvedic marma chikitsa has been considered as the great guru who inspired the forthcame generations with the wisdom of Ayurveda. His extraordinary masterly talent in handling the orthopaedic cases still dwells in the memory of people even after four decades of his demise. He stands as a light in the path of Ayurveda for the generations with an inner guidance and blessings ..His elder son K K Sreedhara kurup opted the profession of Ayurveda as the traditional lineage of the generation.
K K Sreedharakurup , a scholar in Ayurveda born on 4th November 1923 had his education basically in Sanskrit and Indian philosophy for a decade . later studied Ayurveda under gurukula system for several years under a learned guru who taught him the clinical medicine in detail. In 1944 he started his own Ayurveda clinic in his village town near to Sreepadam Ayurveda chikitsalayam to impart the good practice of Ayurveda and to dispense the pure and genuine medicines to the patients who used to come from near and distant places. Later along with the practice in general medicine he became much popular with the dedicated service as a specialist in Paediatrics in Ayurveda. Number of cases like poliomyelitis, chronic skin diseases , gastrointestinal tract disorders, Respiratory problems, muscular dystrophies etc affecting the children were treated successfully ..More than a successful clinician he was also attached to socio-political establishments/organizations locally during his youthful years. He served as the president of co-operative society & bank at kanjoor for five years during which helped the poor and downtrodden public with great humanitarian support. His dream got fulfilled when his elder son K Sasidharan postgraduated in the discipline of Ayurveda , and carried forth the tradition to further heights for the betterment of mankind. His grandson K S Praveenkumar also got graduated in Ayurveda, thus keeping the wisdom of Ayurveda to further generations.
K P Kumarakurup , a doyen in the field of Ayurveda and specialist in vishachikitsa (Ayurvedic toxicology) born on 19th May 1910 studied Sanskrit and Ayurveda for several years started his own Ayurveda clinic locally in 1929 with the name Bharatha vaidyasala which in due course of time grown to develop into number of net work /branches in and outside Kerala .. He did a successful venture while the Ayurveda was catching up in the early period as a marketable business in Kerala and in outside states. He got the meritorious award and a memento from the then Maharaja of kochi for his outstanding contributions in vishachikitsa (Ayurvedic toxicology).His role as a physician was exceptional in treating number of toxicological disorders apart from curing the general as well as paediatric cases who used to come from far of places. His socio/political affiliations were also so deep rooted that he was well-regarded by the then stalwarts and kept a lasting relationship..His younger daughter K K Lethakumari got married to Dr K Sasidharan who is currently the founder & medical director of Sreepadam Ayurveda chikitsalayam.
Dr. K. SASIDHARAN, a postgraduate in Ayurveda (MD) with more than two decades of distinguished service in teaching and research in Ayurveda at the college and university level to his credit is actively engaged in the practice of this time honored and proven system of medicine. He has presented many research papers on various subjects on Ayurveda in National and international seminars and conferences.
