Kerala, the southern state of peninsular India is characterized with the mixture of Aryan and Dravidian traditions in the field of medicine. It was known as Gurushishya parampara in which the master transferred the wisdom to an ardent disciple in a systematic manner. Kerala with exotic environment and rich culture is considered the cradle of Ayurveda where this system became a way of life to the people. Here traditions are the part of life with individuals, families, and society. Centuries of ancestral traditions in Ayurveda specialties are strongly linked to certain families which attracted people from various places to get remedy for different ailments. The vast experience gathered by the 'vaidya' (Senior physician) in such a family passed on their knowledge to their sons and thus kept the system in undiluted form for generations came forth.
For decades dating back even to the reign of Cochin dynasty in South India, the KALARICKAL family situated at Kanjoor near Kalady in Kerala has been justly reputed for kalaripayattu [martial arts] Marma chikitsa and Ayurvedic system of treatments. Here is a model of health and illness that stood the test of time blending tradition and science. Legends have it that when the Cochin empire had been under constant threats from outside, ancestors of present family who were masters of Kalarippayattu and Marma chikitsa were brought from Malabar area to impart expert training to the soldiers of the then dynasty by the orders from the Highness. Most of the descendents of these masters became experts in Sanskrit literature and in the systems of Ayurveda treatments. These scholars imparted this knowledge of age old traditions to generations which followed in the typical gurukula system. The Kalari tradition of this family dates back to many centuries and the goddess deity (Bhagavati) is worshiped since many years by the masters here for protection and healing. Pooja takes place periodically (worshiping) with an annual festivity.
